Taig Top Slide Modification: Taig offers a top-slide which can be mounted at an angle onto the cross-slide for cutting tapers. It attaches onto the cross-slide by a set of dovetail claws which grab onto a steel dovetail rim mounted on a round island in the underside. These jaws…
not use a split half nut like other leadscrew conversions. It does use a half nut of sorts, but it's really just a block with 1/2 the diameter of a thread cut into it. The pressure of the half nut against the screw is backed up by a brass runner against the lathe bed extrusion and that brass runner acts as a wear plate.
Taig takes the returned parts and adds new XY tables, new lead screws, and I don't know what else to turn them into a refurbished manual mill. It sells at about a 40% discount to new. SOLD. The mill came with everything needed to start cutting metal: Mill, Vice, Collets, a few End Mills, etc.
I made a half nut ala Dave Gingery and now have use of the rack and pinion like the original Taig and also now with this half nut the use of manual lead screw on the right of the lathe. To add to that I also added a powered gearbox feeding the lead suply using LM 317 chip from Radio Shack.
If you wish to adapt a Taig Mill to some other CNC system, you can buy a CNC-Ready Taig Mill without the controllers, motors, and cables that Taig sells with its CNC Mills. The "CNC-Ready" Mills ( Models 2018, 2019, or 5019 ) are factory assembled, with ball bearings in lead screw bearing blocks, adjustable leadscrew nuts, couplers, and ...

Reading the OP original post and addding it to a previous one he's trying to compare the Microproto CNC mill which is a Taig mill underneath with a ballscrew machine or just ball screws. The Tail uses standard 1/2" x 20 UNF thread as it's leadscrews, not threaded rod, nicely made screws but still vee thread at the end of the day.

chucked up the end of the lead screw shaft in a Makita. In four or five minutes of forward and reverse on the drill the back lash nut seated in nicely. If you do this, be careful not to muck up the threads on the end of the shaft. After putting everything back together, I bolted the column to the base and used a square to get it in the ball park.

Adding a Lead Screw and Power Feed Taig now offers a lathe equipped with a power feed, but it was a little different from what I needed. I wanted a design that used the more conventional half-nut to engage/disengage with the screw. The lead screw also needed to disengage from whatever gear chain or motor that would be driving it.

The gibs are the movable part of the dove tail on your head stock where is slides on the ways. I am not sure how Taig does it on their mill. On my Taig lathe there are two screws with lock nuts on the back side of the saddle. To tighten or losen the gibbs you losen the nuts and either backout the screws or tighten them as needed.
A typical cnc desktop mill will benefit from way covers, this will protect the lead screws and ways from the worst of the chips. It will make clean up a lot easier. They are usually made from a flexible rubber sheet. These are really easy to clean, yay.
I've had a Taig CNC mill for over 10 years. This has been a really great machine and has worked well for making small injection molds. About a year ago, I upgraded to ball screws, which has given it new life (the backlash with the lead screws was getting pretty bad). I documented that upgrade here: Taig Upgrade Part 1; Taig Upgrade Part 2
The ¾´ extension of the Y axis table travel on the Taig mill is made possible by the fact that the lead screw on the Y axis is longer than needed for the 5 ½´ stock Y axis travel. Additionally, the Y axis ways are long enough to accommodate the additional travel. The saddle ways will overhang the fixed ways by a small amount when
Taig has just released a ballscrew option for the mill. The ballscrews are precision matched with the ball bearings resulting in nearly zero backlash and low friction operation. As the ballscrew mills have about half of the drive reduction as the leadscrew version we are using 276-oz in motors which are a better match for the motion profile.

Updating My Taig - Or Not. I wrote a long rant some time back about how my Taig really got me started down this road. ( A Small CNC Mill - A Huge Education - The Home Shop Machinist & Machinist's Workshop Magazine's BBS ) I started out with a Harbor Freight 7x10 lathe, but the Taig really did things. It was what lead to where I am today.

These parts change Grizzly, Homier, Cummins, and Harbor Freight mini mills to 20 thread per inch feed screws on the X- and Y-axis. Each rotation of the hand wheel will advance the table 0.050". The mini mill tool kit includes two feed screws, two nuts, two 50 division dials, plus the springs and keys that you are going to lose during disassembly.
The lead screws were bad as well as the dials on the advance handles. Later, I upgraded the cross vice with a regular X & Y milling slide table which did much to improve the quality of my cuts. ... The Taig lathe can also be used to mill in five different distinct ways. The first and most direct way is to use the vertical milling attachment ...
TAIG is the cheapest CNC mill that you can buy unless you convert a mini mill to CNC one. Weighing in at 105 lbs, this mill is significantly heavier than the Sherline mill which is only 33 lbs. The travel length of this mill is 12" on X-axis and 5.5" …
